Shawty had them. Yes, the auto tune world took us by surprise in the mid 2000’s. We didn’t know what hit us! At the forefront of it all was Faheem Rashad Najm, other wise known as T-Pain! If you have ever been to a wedding, you have probably heard one of his songs. His voice is iconic and the melodies ring through venues across the world! T-Pain popularized the auto tune effect to change and enhance his voice. Little did he know the world of music was changed forever. Following suit, using this effect are artists such as Snoop, Lil Wayne, Kayne West and Drake. “Believe” it or not, after some research, Cher pioneered the auto tune effect in her 1998 hit “Believe”. Let’s take a look at what T-Pain has accomplished and what he is up to today!

T-Pain - House of Blues Boston show - 06/04/2022

T-Pain has received two Grammy Awards from twelve total nominations. His first grammy was in collaboration with Kanye West for "Good Life" and his second was with Jamie Foxx for "Blame It". In addition, T-Pain was featured as a guest performer on over fifty, yes FIFTY commercial singles from 2006 to 2010. He was definitely popular during this time stretch. His biggest success was with artist Flo Rida and his 2007 debut single "Low", which was named third on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs of the Decade (2000s). “Low” was certified diamond and ten times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Low” is probably one of my favorite songs to play when I am working a wedding. Yes, it is a mega hit from that decade so everybody loves to dance when it comes on. Yes, when T-Pain repeats “low” over and over, we love to go to the ground and sometimes fall, lol. But, it is also one of the most versatile songs to beat match and mix! The song sits at 128 BPMs allowing DJs to come in and out of different genres or decades to surprise the dance floor! I have had EDM sets playing for at least 40 minutes and I will go right in to “Low” to shock the floor! Also, 90s sets where the BPMs are up in the high 120s, like the song “It’s Tricky” transition perfectly with “Low”!

Let’s fast forward to today! What is T-Pain up to now?? Well I have news for you! He is crushing with his latest album,On Top of the Covers, released on March, 17th, 2023. T-Pain said in a press release about the album: “This covers album has been years in the making”. What we knew about T-Pain from the past is his ability to create amazing excerpts when featured alongside other great artists. He has also created some amazing solo albums along the way. But did anyone know how amazing his voice ACTUALLY is? And without auto tune?? Do yourself a favor and check out On Top of the Covers. Highlighted with songs such as Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey,” Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin,’” and Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs”. You will without a doubt love every aspect of this album and realize how vocally talented he actually is……..without auto tune 😉 🎶
